The Coalition's literature describes it as a "Our concerns extend to constitutional government, personal liberties, private property and individual responsibility....Thus, the Coalition was formed, with the mission of educating people about their constitutional rights, so that our free and democratic way of life can be preserved." The Coalition is reachable at 850 Great Neck Road, Copiague, NY 11726.
The Libertarian Party candidate for Governor, Christopher Garvey of Amityville, recently spoke before a meeting of about 200 members of the Coalition drawn island-wide in Smithtown. Garvey, a Roslyn intellectual property lawyer , noted that 1962 state constitutional amendments deprived New Yorkers of various rights. Your home can be taken away if you innocently miss a single tax payment. He calls for overturning these provisions. He condemned zoning and rent control as twin evils interfering with property rights and the freedom of people to pursue housing opportunities.
The desirable goals sought by people in zoning can be accomplished through voluntary methods. Garvey declared that "Libertarian principle is that you can use your property as you please as long as your use does not aggress against your neighbors." The Libertarians condemn eminent domain. In Roosevelt, the Town seized 24 businesses on Nassau Road, 23 of them African-American owned. Libertarians call this legalized theft.
Joining Chris Garvey on this fall's Libertarian Party lineup are William McMillen, a Delmar C.P.A., for U.S. Senate; Daniel Conti, a Hempstead criminal defense lawyer, for Attorney General; Donald Silberger, a New Paltz math professor, for Lieutenant Governor; and Robert Goodman, a Bronx biochemist, for Comptroller. Directing the Garvey and Conti campaigns as Chairman of NY Libertarian Campaign '98 is Richard A. Cooper, a Westbury business executive.
