WELD NOMINATED BY NY LIBERTARIANS

ALBANY, NY -- (04/30/2006) -- The Libertarian Party of NY (LPNY) nominated former Massachusetts Governor William Weld as its candidate for NY governor at their Albany convention. They also nominated Jeffrey Russell from Clifton Park near Albany for US Senate, John Cain from Congers in Rockland County for State Comptroller and Christopher Garvey from Amityville, Long Island. The Lt. Governor choice will be made later. Former State LPNY State Chair Richard Cooper of Westbury, Long Island was elected Chair again. Cooper declared that "The Libertarian Party's selection of Governor Weld will offer New York's over-taxed, over-governed, and over-regulated people a choice for less government in our personal and economic lives. The Libertarian Party will earn its place at the table of public policy debate. All our candidates will strive for less interference and exploitation by government. The Libertarian Party stands for individual liberty, free markets and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace."

According to Cooper, the party's main goal in the election is achieving ballot status by obtaining 50,000 votes for Governor Weld on the Libertarian line.

Jeffrey Russell was nominated for the US Senate. He is a member of both the NRA and the ACLU. He is emphasizing opposition to the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act. He is a staunch supporter of the right to gun ownership.

Insurance broker John Cain wore a wire to expose political corruption in Rockland County, resulting in the conviction of the county's Democratic leader. He is running for Comptroller to question not just the figures but the assumptions behind government spending, debt and taxes. He will question the rationales for eminent domain seizures.

Christopher Garvey is a patent attorney, sailboat captain and former gubernatorial candidate in 1998. He will oppose the war on drugs and its companion war on gun rights.
