| Libertarian Party of NY -- Press Release -- Libertarians Charge Spitzer Spits on the Suffering |
BELLPORT, NY -- (07/28/2006)-- Libertarians condemn Attorney-General Eliot Spitzer for his opposition to medical marijuana. NY State Chair Richard Cooper charges that "Spitzer spits on the suffering of those afflicted with AIDS and cancer. Libertarian philosophy is to let individuals decide. Spitzer's philosophy is let Spitzer decide for all."
Libertarian gubernatorial candidate John Clifton, a social worker and former drug counselor, declares "One of the obligations of being Governor is to protect the health of NY citizens. It would be the height of irresponsibility for Mr. Spitzer to abandon his duty in that office by opposing the humane and efficient delivery of pain relief provided by medical use of marijuana. Whatever one's opinions about the supposed War on Drugs, let's get patients out of the crossfire. The Governor already has powers to protect medical marijuana users that are not being enforced. New Yorkers should demand that Spitzer reverse himself on his appalling stand, or else support alternative candidates who will."
Libertarian comptroller candidate John Cain is himself a cancer survivor. Cain responds to Spitzer "It is unfortunate that a man of such supposedly progressive credentials as Mr. Spitzer would deny those who can benefit from medical marijuana access to it. It is sad that the government still believes it has the right to make medical decisions for the citizens of America. The government should stay out of our wallets, out of our bedrooms and out of our medicine cabinets."
The other statewide Libertarian candidates sharing this support for medical marijuana are: Jeffrey Russell for US Senate, Donald Silberger for Lt. Governor, and Christopher Garvey for Attorney-General. The Libertarian Party favors not just medical marijuana but the legalization of all drugs.
According to Cooper, the Libertarian Party opposes the slippery slope to tobacco prohibition.
