LONG'S SHOT ON WELD FALLS SHORT, SAYS LIBERTARIAN CHAIR

Bellport, NY 5/23/06 Libertarian Party State Chair Richard Cooper corrected his Conservative Party opposite number Mike Long about Libertarian gubernatorial nominee William Weld. The Albany Times-Union’s “Capitol Confidential” blog reported in “Long In The Breach” by Elizabeth Benjamin on May 19th that Long said “Now when he knows he’s not being considered by the Conservative Party, he’s appealing to the Libertarian Party.” To the contrary, Cooper declares that the “Libertarians were negotiating with Weld last fall. Moreover, we understood that the Weld campaign hoped to run on the Conservative and Libertarian lines at the very least in addition to the Republican line.”

Cooper expects that some registered Conservatives as well as Republicans, Independence Party, and non-enrolled voters will choose the Libertarian Party ticket of Weld for Governor, Jeffrey Russell for US Senate, John Cain for State Comptroller and Christopher Garvey for Attorney-General. For example, the Martin family of Suffolk County has four registered Conservatives who intend to vote for Weld on the Libertarian line: parents Deborah and Bruce, children Crystal and Adam. Bruce Martin has been a Conservative Party primary candidate.

Cooper explains “The Libertarian Party stands for individual liberty, free markets and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace. We Libertarians offer a home for the politically homeless regardless of whether they call themselves conservative, liberal, moderate, or even radical.”
