NY LIBERTARIANS NOMINATE MATH PROFESSOR SILBERGER FOR US SENATE, REJECTING GOP CHALLENGER
New Paltz, NY 4/26/04: The Libertarian Party of New York nominated Donald Silberger for US Senate this weekend when the group held its anual statewide convention in Manhattan. He was chosen over Republican Conservative Michael Menjamin to challenge Charles Schumer this fall. Dr. Silberger is a Harvard graduate, has a PhD in mathematics (1973, University of Washington in Seattle), and is now an Associate Professor of Mathematics at SUNY College at New Paltz.
Silberger emphasized in his acceptance speech his strong opposition to the war on drugs, the war in Iraq, and the USA PATRIOT Act. He also expressed his staunch support for the individual right to keep and bear arms, and for a full restoration of the Bill of Rights, which has been eroded by the drug war and other unnecessary wars that our government has waged. His campaign will raise questions about these issues which career politicians are afraid to ask, including, ``Why does the United States of America incarcerate a larger percentage, and a larger number, of its citizens than any other nation on earth?"
A long-time activist for the Libertarian Party, Silberger was their candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 1998. His current plans include traversing New York full-time for three months this summer, listening to peoples' concerns, answering questions, and letting them know, that by voting for him, they can ``place their names in the column that represents limited government, lower taxes, opposition to endless wars, foreign and domestic. They can help send a signal to both major parties: NOT WITH MY VOTE YOU DON'T!"
