G.O.P. Senate Contender Seeks Libertarian Nomination

Bellport, NY 4/22/04: Michael Benjamin, a Republican candidate contending for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate to run against Democrat Charles Schumer, has informed The Libertarian Party of New York (LPNY) that he is also interested in receiving its endorsement for U.S. Senate at its convention on Saturday, April 24. It has been confirmed that Mr. Benjamin or a representative will attend, to seek the party's nomination during its afternoon business session.

His main opponent for the Libertarian nomination is Donald Silberger, an Associate Professor of Mathematics at SUNY-New Paltz. Professor Silberger has indicated he is fully prepared to debate the Republican prior to the nominating vote. In addition to the Senate horserace, four other elected officials have confirmed they will attend, to be honored as Champions of Liberty for pro-freedom actions they have taken (NYC Councilman Bill Perkins, State Assembly Members Jeffrion Aubry and Adam Clayton Powell IV, and State Senator Malcolm A. Smith).

Other convention highlights will include: Keynote speaker Justin Raimondo, Editorial Director of Antiwar.com on Iraq; Libertarian presidential candidates Gary Nolan and Aaron Russo; National Taxpayers Union president John Berthoud; Gwen Patton of the gay gunowners group Pink Pistols and NRA Director John Cushman on gun rights; former State Chair Richard Cooper on eminent domain and Brooklynite Gary Popkin on the Brooklyn Nets Arena controversy.
