NY Libertarians Pick Statewide Candidates and Elect New Officers

Bellport, NY 4/16/02: The Libertarian Party of New York concluded their statewide convention this weekend in Rochester, picking Scott Jeffrey of Manhattan for Governor. Scott Jeffrey's campaign emphasizes school choice, youth empowerment, marijuana legalization, gun rights and the restoration of the 18 year-old drinking age. Running with Jeffrey are fellow Manhattanites Jay Greco for Lt. Governor and James Eisert for State Comptroller. For Attorney-General, the Libertarians are running Daniel Conti, Jr. of Suffolk County. Mr. Conti ran for Attorney-General in 1998, and garnered almost the vote difference between Vacco and Spitzer.

Jeffrey, 33, is the founder of Legalize (www.legalize.com) advocating marijuana legalization and is a software developer for a media company. He is a Princeton graduate and lives on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Jeffrey challenges our traditional liberal versus conservative politics, "Government should have a much more limited role in both society and the economy than it does at present."

Scott Jeffrey rejects bipartisan budget gimmickry. Jeffrey contends "Taxes, spending and debt are too high. I do not support any ballot initiatives that pretend to issue debt for specific programs." Jeffrey sees a root cause to many problems. "The concept of our God-given, constitutionally protected rights has been distorted. Politicians talk of so-called rights to goods and services that they want the government to provide. At the same time that politicians invent a new definition of rights, they also increasingly attack our actual rights. From the right to own a gun to the right to smoke marijuana, the government is denying us our most basic freedoms."

Jeffrey has run for office twice-- for Congress and for Manhattan Borough President--before seeking the nomination for Governor. His goal is to obtain 50,000 votes which would Libertarians official party status. His website is www.votejeffrey.com. The Libertarians picked Albert Dedicke of Mt. Morris in Livingston County to replace Richard Cooper of Nassau County as State Chair. Cooper explains their positions. "The Libertarian Party stands for individual liberty, free markets, and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace."
