Black Candidate Shakes Up Salt City & New York

10/15/01: Physician Jennifer Daniels, the Libertarian Party's candidate for Mayor of Syracuse, will shake up "Salt City" (Syracuse's nickname) and New York with her prescription of individual liberty, fiscal and personal responsibility. She says, "I am a libertarian because I have seen the damage government has done nd feel that lessening the involvement of government will make life a lot safer and better." Daniels is a well-known black community activist, entrepreneur and recipient of M.D. and M.B.A degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

Daniels is running to win, according to NY Libertarian Chair Richard Cooper. He welcomes her candidacy, "Jennifer Daniels defeated a corporate welfare scheme which would have taken $30 million from the school budget and handed it over to developers. This is a race of national importance as the Democratic National Chair has gotten personally involved in his hometown

The main issues of Dr. Daniels's campaign are ending corporate welfare and the drug war in order to reduce the taxes driving people from Syracuse. She contends "Government sponsored corporate welfare is creating poverty. Government has become a mechanism of centralized exploitation to extract from the citizens what they will not freely give to monied interests. I favor curbing eminent domain. "

Daniels rejects both the drug war and gun control as solutions to problems. "I feel that the war on drugs has failed, should be halted, and is being used as a pretense to introduce a police state and repeal constitutional rights. I feel that the violence issue is one of habitat. The guns are not the problem." Daniels knows racial profiling, worsened by the drug war, first-hand. "I have been subject to racial profiling. As mayor, I would be able to assure that others would not have this experience, d save tax dollars too."
