Missing Hero Cop Honored By Libertarian Colleagues

Westbury, NY 10/03/01: Police officer, attorney and Libertarian Party member John W. Perry was at Police Plaza filing his retirement papers when word of the World Trade Center attack came over the radio. He rushed there at once. Perry was last seen on the mezzanine of the WTC. Libertarian Party of New York Chair Richard Cooper announced today the establishment of a John Perry Community Service Award to honor a fallen friend and colleague. Cooper said "I'm not suprised that he went over to help out immediately. As a libertarian and a police officer, he was dedicated to defending everyone's right to life, liberty and property." Officer Perry had served in the Police Department prosecuting corrupt cops. He was recently transferred to the 40th Precinct in the Bronx as a beat patrolman. He was 38 years old, of black and white parentage, and grew up in Seaford, Long Island.

Cooper knew Perry for over ten years from libertarian gatherings. He celebrates John Perry's life and mourns his fate with fellow Libertarians. "We learned from John's experience as a policeman opposing the war on drugs, gun control, police brutality, racial profiling and the vice laws. I hoped that he would represent the Libertarian Party as a candidate, which he could not do as a police officer. If not for Libertarian events, I probably would never have known a true hero." Cooper will give the first John Perry Community Service Award at next April's convention to fellow Libertarian John Cain of Congers, whose exposure of a corruption ring in Rockland County led to convictions.

NYC Libertarian mayoral candidate Kenny Kramer remembers that John Perry encouraged his candidacy with excellent advice. Kramer offered this tribute. "His advice was very helpful and the sincerity he displayed was genuine. Not only was John a great man he was also a great Libertarian. I offer my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. If it's any consolation it is that the world now knows that John died a true American hero."
