| Libertarian Party of NY -- Press Release -- Libertarians Present "Guns Save Lives and Rights" Speaker |
The Libertarian Party views gun ownership as a solution rather than a problem. According to Richard Cooper of Westbury, the Libertarian Party of New York State Chair, the Libertarians find the root of both gun violence and racial profiling in the war on drugs. Cooper says "We call for the repeal of the Sullivan Law, which licenses guns in New York. Sullivan was a corrupt Tammany Hall politician and gangster trying to disarm others. Did you know that our first gun laws were part of the Jim Crow segregationist codes. We condemn Gulotta's increase in the pistol permit fee to $200. There should be no cost to exercising your constitutional rights."
John Clifton, a social work administrator and drug counselor, running as the Libertarian candidate for US Senate champions "the right to self-defense through gun ownership." Clifton adds that "We need gun freedom, that is, a repeal of the culture of control freaks, and a restoration of gun freaks. Gun control equals gun confiscation equals rights confiscation; if you cannot freely keep and bear arms, you cannot freely practice self-government." He participated in demonstrations on behalf of the right of K-Mart to sell guns on Long Island earlier this year.
Harry Browne, the Libertarian presidential candidate, declares that "Criminals will always be armed, even if they have to smuggle, steal, or manufacture the weapons themselves. They will never buy them in ways that involve registration, background checks, waiting periods, or safety locks. So gun laws have no effect on true criminals; their only effect is to intrude upon your privacy and make it harder for you to defend yourself. Al Gore wants even more gun laws. George W. Bush wants tougher enforcement of the existing gun laws. Only Harry Browne, the Libertarian candidate, wants to repeal all these harmful laws, so you'll no longer be at a disadvantage to criminals." He too, calls for the end to the disastrous War on Drugs.
