Libertarians Run Everyday Hero Candidates

The Libertarian Party of New York is challenging the political establishment with a slate of candidates that State Chair Richard Cooper of Westbury calls "everyday heroes." New Yorkers will have the chance to vote for Harry Browne and Art Olivier for President and Vice-President, John Clifton for US Senate, and Congressional candidates Scott Jeffrey (Manhattan-Queens) and Stephen Healey (Rochester). Cooper reports that Libertarians stand for individual liberty, free markets and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace. Cooper calls these candidates "outstanding public-spirited individuals with knowledge and experience from the real world of productive effort not the parasitic corporate socialist world. That is why they are everyday heroes."

Harry Browne is a best-selling author and investment advisor. He was the Libertarian Party candidate for President in 1996. Browne makes what he calls the Great Libertarian Offer. "I am running for President because it's obvious that no Democrat or Republican is going to stop the relentless growth of the federal government. No one but a Libertarian will reduce the federal government to its Constitutional limits, reduce your taxes dramatically, and allow you to live your life as a free American. I am running for President because the Federal government has stuck its nose into virtually every area of your life, with no Constitutional authority...If we get the federal government out of all these areas, not only will they operate better, we will also no longer need a federal income tax--and we won't need to replace it with anything." His running-mate Art Olivier is in the computer design business and served as mayor of 67,000 population Bellflower, California.

Queens resident John Clifton is a Navy veteran from the front-lines of our national defense as a submarine ballistic missile technician who opposes the global military adventurism supported by his opponents. John Clifton is a social work administrator and drug counselor on the front-lines of our social problems in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn who rejects the welfare state and the war on drugs. His theme is "Just Say Yes To Liberty" which means five freedoms: tax freedom, drug freedom, gun freedom, personal freedom, and peace and freedom. An African-American, Clifton lays the principal blame for racial profiling and gun violence on the War on Drugs. In contrast to his "gun control freak" opponents, Clifton champions the "right to self-defense through gun ownership." He hopes to win the margin between Hillary and "Hillary Lite."

Stephen Healey is a Rochester engineer focusing his campaign on "Social Security privatization, ending Federal interference with education, stopping the insane war on drugs, and defending gun ownership." Healey offers "My pledge: I will never increse your taxes. I will never vote for big government. I will always put your freedom first." Healey is challenging Democrat Louise Slaughter.

Scott Jeffrey is a software developer with MTV stressing "the legalization of marijuana, the empowerment of urban youth and the restoration of our God-given, constitutional rights." A marijuana legalization activist, Jeffrey is the founder of www.legalize.com. Jeffrey is taking on Democrat Charles Rangel.

Besides their campaigns, the Libertarians are busy defending a Long Island Pentecostal church and a Westchester neighborhood against seizure by local politicos.
