Bellport, NY-2/23/00: The Libertarian Party of New York (LPNY) urges all Americans, regardless of race, to take note of Black History Month and the libertarian lessons it offers of the evil consequences of collectivism, statism and legalized theft. Whether it is the era of slavery, segregation or welfarism, black Americans (and others) have been on the wrong end of organized force of big government and its allies, according to LPNY Media Director Richard Cooper of Westbury.

Cooper quotes Frederic Bastiat, a nineteenth-century French journalist admired by libertarians who saw slavery and protective tariffs as the blights on the United States of his time. "The law has placed the collective force at the disposal of the unscrupulous who wish, without risk, to exploit the person, liberty and property of others. It has converted plunder into a right, in order to protect plunder." Black Americans have often been the victims of this legalized plunder, whether it be in the form of slavery, unionism, occupational licensing, corporate welfare, eminent domain or segregation.

The Libertarian Party of Nassau County headed by Richard Cooper is defending the rights of the black St. Luke's Pentecostal Church in Westbury and New Cassel threatened by eminent domain and bureaucratic pressure by the Town of North Hempstead's Community Development Authorit on the building they bought with intent to renovate and use. The Town offered Rev. Fred Jenkins $80,000 for the property he paid $130,000 for. The Town's Zoning Board blocked the renovations they were doing on the building, and prevented them from opening. A zoning board official said "We have enough churches here in New Cassel." They revoked the tax exemption on the property because the church hadn't opened the doors the Town itself had kept shut. Cooper sees this as yet another example of legalized theft pushing people around. The Town of Hempstead eliminated many businesses in Roosevelt this way.

African-Americans participate in the Libertarian Party in many ways. John Clifton of Queens, a social work administrator and drug counselor in Bedford-Stuyvesant who rejects the welfare state and the war on drugs, is the New York Party Treasurer. Many colleagues urge him to run against Rudy and Hillary. Richard Boddie, a manage- ment consultant is running for Congress in California. Brian Thomas is a talk show host with Nubian Information Network (under the name "Brian Higgins") and was elected to Town office in Massachusetts.

The Libertarian Party stands for individual liberty, free markets and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace. The New York party convention April 29th at the Royal Regency Hotel in Yonkers will present, amongst others, Reginald Jones of New Jersey on the topic "Freedom Is The Cure For Racism." Jones will talk about hip-hop entrepreneurship and the impact of big government on black Americans and the Libertarian alternative.
