8/23/00-- The Libertarian Party of New York yesterday filed to offer its candidates as alternatives to the major parties. NY Libertarian Chair Richard Cooper of Westbury announced that petitions for Harry Browne for President, Art Olivier for Vice-President and John Clifton for US Senate were filed with the State Board of Elections. Also filing were Congressional candidates Stephen Healey in the 28th District (Rochester) against incumbent Louise Slaughter and Scott Jeffrey in the 15th District (Upper Manhattan and part of Queens in New York City) against incumbent Charles Rangel, both Democrats. In upstate Warren and Franklin counties, Bill Bombard filed to be the sole opposition to 109th District Assemblywoman Elizabeth Little. Libertarian Chair Cooper reports that the Libertarian Party stands for individual liberty, free markets, and personal responsibility in order to promote a society that enjoys more justice, abundance and peace.
John Clifton is a Navy veteran from the frontlines of our national defense as a ballistic missile technician and opposes the global military adventurism supported by his opponents. Clifton is a social work administrator and drug counselor from the frontlines of our social problems who opposes the welfare state and the war on drugs. Clifton emphasizes five freedoms: tax freedom, drug freedom, gun freedom, personal freedom, and peace and freedom. His theme is "Just say yes to liberty!" Clifton is the first African-American nominated by the New York Libertarians for statewide office and stresses that talking about racial profiling or gun violence without bringing up the drug war is dishonest.
Harry Browne is a best-selling investment advisor and author. He was the Libertarian candidate for President in 1996. Art Olivier is in the computer graphics business and served as mayor of Bellflower, California, a city of 67,000.
Stephen Healey is an engineer focusing his campaign on "Social Security privatization, ending Federal interference with education and stopping the "insane war on drugs," and the right to self-defense through gun ownership."
Scott Jeffrey is a software developer with MTV emphasizing "the legalization of marijuana, the empowerment of urban youth and the restoration of our God-given, constitutional rights."
Cooper says that the Libertarians are offering an outstanding cast of candidates who will provide the option of smaller, limited constitutional government to voters. He urges New Yorkers to consider the Libertarian option, to vote for and to join the Libertarian Party, and to seek the Libertarian nominations in the future.
