Letter to the Ithaca Journal: Government work

01/21/05

I am writing in response to David Brong's letter published on Jan. 13 regarding the union monopoly on local government contracts. Three cheers for David Brong and his letter pointing out the unintended consequences of the legislated labor-union monopoly.

During the course of history, rarely have monopolies existed without government support.

This time is no different. But do not fault our local government for their well-intended support of vocational training programs. Do fault our elected officials for the higher prices, fewer choices and lower quality that a union monopoly will foist upon taxpayers.

The Tompkins County Legislature and the City of Ithaca are demonstrating why so many people describe high prices and poor quality by saying: "It's good enough for government work."
