Legislative Watch

12/8/04 NY State lawmakers voted yesterday for a partial reform of the state's harsh drug laws. Quoted by AP News, Rockefeller Drug Law Reformer Robert Gangi called the changes "modest" and noted that they didn't return discretion to judges, one of the key calls of the "Drop the Rock" coalition. Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry, the most influential elected proponent of serious change, was quoted by the Journal News as saying "While I firmly believe that full judicial discretion and treatment as an alternative to prison would be the best options, for right now, this is substantial progress." Other proponents of reform, such as Russell Simmons of the Hip-Hop Action Network, agree that they wanted more, but they view the new legislation as progress.

Legal News

If you find yourself in trouble over something you don't think should be a crime, you might want to peruse the Bill of Rights, with some tips on how to use it (from Dan Conti, who might be able to help you further). The LPNY does not have a lot of resources to help you fight the battle, but we can help publicize certain kinds of cases with you--let us know what victimless crime you've been accused of.

FIJA.orgFIJA, the Fully Informed Jury Association, exists to provide information about Jury Nullification of unjust laws. This is an established way to change the laws, but no judge wants you to know about it (except libertarian ones)! Ways to get involved include passing out FIJA literature around court houses when your friends are going on trial for a victimless crime. ;-)

Judicial Watch--the group that uncovered John Huang and protects those threatened with eminent domain.

If you know of trials to attend or other groups to support, please let us know on the lpny_legal mailing list.
