Taxes are too high--we call a boycott!
Last time taxes got too high on addictive leaves, some brave patriots risked their lives to throw the product in the harbor. This is a slightly less drastic step, we think. Just order your next carton online--you could save $20!
On January 15, Governor Pataki and the State Legislature agreed to hike cigarette taxes by 39 cents to $1.50.
More recently, Mayor Bloomberg of NYC proposed increasing the city tax on cigarettes from 8 cents to $1.50 per pack, and it passed in the State Legislature. This is outraging the small newspaper kiosks and cigar shops, some of whom see most of their revenue from cigarettes.
Cigs are now over $7 a pack in NYC. That's just too much! Join us in the boycott and save some money for yourself!
This isn't the end of what NY State government has planned for smokers...see the bills under consideration in the NY State Legislature now. Things like trying to charge taxes on cigarettes from reservations and confiscating cars from people who transport untaxed cigarettes! Please contact your state senator and assembly member to express your outrage.
The LPNY's Manhattan Chapter held a cigarette giveaway 4/17/02 to protest the new tax. The meeting got press before the event in the NY Daily News and CNS.
Jim L. writes:
Our cigarette giveaway was a resounding success. We had 45 people attend, including about 25 guests, and we signed up 5 new members. 19 of the guests took us up on the free smokes. When we asked how they heard about us, it was evenly divided by those who saw the article in the Daily News and those who saw our paid ad on the back cover of NY Press.

Libertarians believe that you have the right to do what you want as long as you don't interfere with the rights of others. We believe that New York State government is too big, too expensive, and does too much. In the case of the cigarette tax, we believe that smokers have been taxed and regulated too much, and this should stop. New York State should end the cigarette tax, cut the size of government, and let us keep the money we have earned to spend on our families and our future.
