North Country Libertarians

The Northern region covers Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Lewis and Herkimer counties. It's the U.S. side of the St. Lawrence River Valley, the northern part of NY's Lake Champlain region, plus most of the Adirondacks. On the southern edges, we border the Capital Region LP affiliate (recognized by the LPNY), and the non-recognized Central NY area.

Media Mentions
Marijuana Backers Upset by Ruling Libertarian Lee Monnet (former LP candidate for State Senate) was quoted extensively in an Ogdensburg Journal article on the Raich decision. Sample quote: "Basically what it came down to was who has the power, the federal government or the states, and apparently the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has the ultimate power." Nice job, Lee!

If you send in a letter to the editor, share it with us on our mailing list, and it should find its way to this web page. People who have three letters published in a year mentioning Libertarianism will win the Lights of Liberty award from the Advocates for Self-Goverment!

Marine Security Level 1, Grand Isle Ferry
Did you know? All the Lake Champlain ferry crossings are at Marine Security Level 1, or MarSec1. That means that you consent to a search of your car if you want to take the ferry. It's been that way since 2004

Ongoing: Border Patrol is still at it on the Northway. See the ny.lp.org feature, The War Comes to Essex County, NY. June, 2005 update: NewsHawk Larry Seguin noted an Ogdensburg Journal article about an illegal drug bust thrown out of court. There are few limits placed on the USBP checkpoints, but if they don't have enough 'probable cause' for a human to search your car, they can't detain you for 50 minutes waiting for a drug dog to give them probable cause. If they'd read our summary, The War Comes to Essex County, or the recent Caballas decision, they'd have known that.

The checkpoint, now proven deadly, is located between exits 29 and 30 on the southbound side of the Northway (I-87). Roving U.S. Border Patrol have been stopping cars getting off at the prior exit or otherwise travelling down Route 9N. There are also checkpoints up near the Saint Lawrence Seaway on Routes 11 and 37, and on I-91 near White River Junction, VT.

Meetings
We are starting to have regular meetings...on the third Wednesday of each month, 7pm at the Koffee Kat (104 Margaret Street in Plattsburgh). PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION FOR FEBRUARY! Februray 15, 2006, we will be meeting at Bob Hofer's house, 537 Miner Farm Road, a half mile east of Chazy Central Rural School. If you are coming up route 9 from Plattsburgh, take the first right in Chazy after the Stewart's. The house is the first one that sits way back from the road and the house number is on the mail box.
